REFORMED CHURCH BUILDING

REFORMED CHURCH BUILDING

Reformed Church Building

The Reformed (Calvinist) Church Building in Nyírbátor is one of the most frequently visited monuments in Hungary. It was built by István Báthori, Voivode of Transylvania and hero of the Battle of Kenyérmező, who also played a significant part in the construction of the castle and the Minorite Church Building. Construction probably began sometime around 1484 and was completed around 1511. The building itself consists of a single huge hall, with a small, square stair tower attached to its south-western corner. An integral part of the church building is a wooden bell tower standing next to it, built in 1640 in Transylvanian style. The tower, constructed of oak beams, is almost 30 meters tall and is the largest and oldest wooden bell tower in Hungary. During the course of its renovation, the church building was complemented with a new touristic attraction: an elevator was installed next to the stairs of the refurbished tower, so that the restored wooden roof structure, which is unique in the whole of Europe, can also be presented and observed in its entirety.
